2001 to present Woodworx
Collaboration with Australian singer Toni Wood – now based
in Glasgow, the WoodworX performs a mix of British and Australian Songs from
both contemporary and traditional sources as well as some poem settings (Burns,
Lawson). The ensemble can either appear as a semi-acoustic quartet (with

fiddle/sax). Brian plays guitars, guitar synthesiser
and shares the vocals with Toni as well as arranging
the songs and managing the band.

commercial release to date – “Two Short PlanX” on POKE Records (PROD013).

1999 A Midsummer Night’s Dream
In 1999 I was asked by the Bancroft
Players to be the musical director of the Millennium production of
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The production was also the 250th production of the company and was
an updated version of the very fist performance in the natural amphitheatre
that is situated next to the Queen Mother Theatre in Hitchin. The company was a
mixture of professional actors, students from the local theatrical college and
amateur players. The resulting production was a very physical interpretation of
the original text and the music had to reflect this while still suggesting the
antiquity of the setting. As well as setting music to the various song lyrics a
far amount of incidental music needed to be arranged as the distances between
the stage areas and off-stage were much greater than found in a conventional
theatre.
1997 to 2000 The Open Road
Formed in the summer of 1994 by
Rick Christian, The Open Road rapidly earned favourable reactions to
their performances combining first class vocal harmonies and excellent
musicianship. Brian joined the band when the original guitarist – Peter Dunhill
– left the band in 1997 to continue his music studies. During this period the
band toured on the acoustic and folk club circuit, played at a number of folk
festivals, community events, toured Wales and performed an extensive programme
of dates for the Council for Music in Hospitals.
The band released an eponymous
album on the Just For the Record Label in 1996 (JUSTMC 2).
1985 to 1999 Nightwatch
The predecessor to MoonDance, the band had a similar
format but with Brian on bass guitar, guitar and vocals. The band performed at
music clubs, festivals and public and private events around the UK.
The band had two commercial releases – an eponymous EP
(PROD002) and a CD called “Dusk Till Dawn” released on the 33 Records world
music label (33WM106)
1998 to 1999 Carry the Can
Brian joined this Stevenage based
trio to co-write and perform a week long show with poet Bob Jones and guitarist
Simon Smith. The show was called “Thinking about our lives…” and was a powerful
combination of spoken word, music, song and projected multimedia images themed
on living in today's post-industrial society. Touching on diverse topics such
as the environment and personal lifestyle it took the audience on a journey
from creation to apocalypse and back again. Brian also developed the multimedia
element of the production.
1986 to 1994 Innocent Bystander
Along with Graham Goffee (guitar)
and Bru Brown (sax) from Candleford Band and Richard Spooner from Nightwatch,
the Bystanders played a mix of original and R&B covers around the South
East of England. Graham and Brian were the song writers and the covers ranged
from Robert Johnson, through Ry Cooder to Joe Jackson.
1979 to 1985 Cluster of Nuts Band
Brian joined the ‘Nuts’ soon after arriving in the UK from
Australia. The band was at the cutting edge of the social dance revival that
was known at the time as ‘Rogue Folk’ and developed into the current e-ceilidh
movement. Brian played electric bass and had a strong influence on the overall
sound as one of the main arrangers in the band. The band played at festivals,
clubs and functions all over the country.
The band released one album – called ‘Fridge in the fast
lane” on POKE Records (PROD001), label that the band set up.
"... folk music bubbling with ideas and enthusiasm
..." - Southern Rag
"Worth a spin on anyone's deck" - Hartlepool Mail
1976 to 1979 Bluetongue Bush Band
The band was originally created from the members of the
Sydney based bands Spinefex and The Rum Rebellion with the
addition of Brian on electric bass, 12 string guitar and vocals.
The band was resident at two Sydney venues - the Dispensary
Wine Bar in Anandale and the Covent Garden Hotel which was just off Haymarket
in the centre of town. Apart from these regular gigs, the band performed
throughout the Sydney area and further a field in rural NSW.
As well as performing concert material, the band ran a
monthly series of Bush Dances at the Surrey Hills Community centre as well as
appearing at the Balmain Town Hall dances and many private functions.
